Join Sunrise Tours on a custom tour of beautiful Iceland, the most sparsely populated country in Europe and home to volcanic splendors and spectacular scenery. Despite its proximity to the Arctic Circle, Iceland benefits from the warming air of the Gulf Stream making summer a delightful time to visit. This custom Sunrise itinerary sold out in 2018 so book early!

Day 1: Overnight flight
Fly to Reykjavik. (D, B in flight)

Day 2: Welcome to Iceland
After an overnight flight, arrive in Reykjavik and enjoy an introductory tour of the capital of Iceland, the northernmost capital in the world, before a short journey to Hella for a 5-night stay at the Stracta Hotel. There is an Icelandic horse farm located next to the Stracta Hotel, affording an opportunity for you to see these iconic animals up close (time permitting). D

Day 3: Golden Circle
An awe-inspiring visit to three of Iceland’s most important spots: Gullfoss Waterfall, Geyser Hot Springs and Þingvellir National Park. Gullfoss, “the golden falls”, is a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvítá River. See the steam from the Geysir geothermal fields as you arrive. The original geyser is now dormant and has been replaced by Strokkur, “the Churn”, which erupts at 5-10-minute intervals. Next stop is the ancient Viking Parliament area of Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. B, D

Day 4: South Shore with optional glacier hike
Highlights today include the famous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, the 60-meter-high Skógafoss Waterfall and the narrow Seljalandsfoss Waterfall with a trail that leads behind the falls – be prepared to get wet! Visit Skogar Folk Museum with a selection of turf houses. Take an optional glacier walk (additional expense, hiking boots required) or a visit to the bird cliffs and lava beaches near Vík. B, D

Day 5: Westman Islands
Ahoy! Take a short ferry ride to the Westman Islands. Explore the town of Heimaey and this extraordinary island by foot and by bus. The volcanic eruption here in 1973 is considered the largest natural disaster in Iceland in recent history. After the evacuation of the inhabitants, and during the 5 months while the eruption lasted, there was much uncertainty as to whether the island could ever be repopulated. During our tour to the Westman Islands we explore bird cliffs, walk up the volcano crater and visit “Pompeii of the North”, a volcanic excavation project. Enjoy a free afternoon to wander around the town of Heimaey. B, D

Day 6: Vatnajökull National Park
Soak in amazing scenery on a trip to the southern part of the Vatnajökull National Park, home of Europe’s largest glacier and Jökulsárlón, a glacier lagoon with floating icebergs. B, D

Day 7: Reykjanes Peninsula, Blue Lagoon and Reykjavik
Take a less traveled route around Reykjanes Peninsula as diverse geological features, the hot springs of Krýsuvík, mountains, lava fields, amazing bird cliffs, moonlike landscapes and fishing villages are on today’s itinerary. The tour ends with a visit (and optional swim!) to the famous Blue Lagoon (subject to availability). Return to Reykjavik for a two-night stay at the Centerhotel Arnarhvoll. B, D

Day 8: Free day
Our convenient downtown location is a great spot from which to explore the Capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. Options (some require additional cost) you may consider include; Puffin boat tour, ascend the Hallgrímskírkja Tower for incredible views, visit the National Museum of Iceland or the Saga Viking Museum. B, D
