Almost Ready for "Sicily and the Amalfi Coast"
September 13, 2024
To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything, says Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He was certainly right there, because there is so much to be discovered on the island of Sicily.
I recently took a few days to visit the island ahead of Sunrise Tours’ highly anticipated “Sicily and the Amalfi Coast” tour, taking place in May 2025. I spent my time in Palermo and Taormina, two of our five stops within Sicily on this tour.
First up was Palermo. The city had a strong architectural charm, with many historic piazzas and churches, radiating that true Italian feeling. The vibrant atmosphere was complemented by the presence of many visitors, adding to the lively energy. While exploring, I noticed that mornings offered a quieter chance to see the city's authentic character. Walking is a big part of the experience, which allows you to fully immerse yourself in the sights, as many of the attractions are best explored on foot.
Our hotel in Palermo will be the Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa, and “grand” is the perfect word to describe it. This hotel is situated in a prime location, just steps from the city center’s main streets, shops, and cafes. My room was exceptionally spacious, offering plenty of comfort and charm. The staff were incredibly accommodating, always polite and kind, both at reception and in the breakfast room. Their service really stood out. Also featured at the hotel is a spa and wellness center, as well as a beautiful grand courtyard with plenty of seating where one might enjoy an afternoon tea or a glass of wine as a nightcap.
Exploring Palermo was easy to do from the hotel. In my short visit, I was able to see the Quattro Canti (the “Four Corners”), Piazza San Domenico, and Piazza Pretoria. I also saw their famous Cathedral, had dinner at the marina, and walked up and down “Via Roma,” a popular avenue. I loved the charm, history, and walkability of Palermo. I just couldn’t wait to see what else Sicily had in store for me.
Off to Taormina, I hopped on a train that took me across the island to the eastern coastline. High up in the cliffs sat the beautiful Hotel Bel Soggiorno. From the train station I took a cab up to the hotel to drop off my belongings before exploring the city.
All of Taormina is stunning, with breathtaking views at every turn. The city center is always buzzing with vibrant energy. One highlight is the beautiful city garden, offering incredible views and a peaceful walking path. During my stay, there was live music or a concert in this garden both nights, which added to its charm. The town was constantly bustling with visitors and locals alike. Taormina is also full of fantastic shopping, delicious gelato, and charming cafes, making it a perfect spot to explore and unwind.
Hotel Bel Soggiorno in Taormina is a small, intimate gem that exudes beauty and charm. While the room itself was simple, the real highlight was the terrace. I spent hours out there, enjoying the sounds of boats, Vespas, and people below and soaking in the incredible views of both the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. Each room in the hotel offers a view thanks to its perfect hillside location. Breakfast was also a delight, especially enjoyed outside on the beautiful terrace, making for a peaceful and scenic start to each day.
Visiting Sicily is like stepping into a world where history, culture, and natural beauty intertwine effortlessly. From the ancient ruins and stunning architecture to the vibrant local markets and mouthwatering cuisine, every corner of this island tells a story. Its rich blend of influences, warm hospitality, and breathtaking landscapes make it a destination that leaves a lasting impression, inviting you to return again and again.
I can’t wait for our travelers to experience the beauty of Sicily and the Amalfi Coast May 13-25, 2025. For more information on this tour and to book, click here.
