Day 2: Homestead Resort
Learn about the history of coal mining at the Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, WV. Ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine aboard a comfortable “man trip” driven by veteran miners sharing firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and trials of past and present-day miners. Enjoy a celebration of regional cuisine during lunch at Tamarack Artisan Village, the first showcase of handcrafts and fine art in the United States. Travel through the Allegheny Mountains to experience Southern hospitality and elegant charm at its finest during a two-night stay at The Omni Homestead Resort, a premier Hot Springs resort for 23 U.S. Presidents dating back to the 18th century. B, L

Day 3: Cass Scenic Railroad
Visit the National Radio Astronomy Observatory to learn about the fascinating world of radio astronomy and an up-close tour of their massive telescopes with our local guide. Relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life when we board the Cass Scenic Railroad, home to the world’s largest fleet of geared Shay locomotives. Travel the same line built in 1901 to haul lumber to the mill in Cass, enjoy breathtaking views, and tour an authentic logging camp during a stop at Whittaker Station. Return to the Homestead for an elegant dinner in the main dining room. B, D

Day 4: New River Gorge and Hawks Nest State Park
Visit the Canyon Rim Visitor Center for a spectacular view of the country’s second highest bridge, the New River Gorge Bridge, spanning the craggy 1,000-foot deep New River Gorge. Venture to Hawks Nest State Park overlooking the New River, the second oldest river in the world. Take an exhilarating tram ride to the bottom of the gorge to enjoy the colorful fall foliage from the boardwalk along the river. Continue to Ashland, KY for our two night stay. B, D

Day 5: New River Train Excursion
Since 1968, the world-renowned New River Train has taken travelers on a journey through the “Grand Canyon of the East”, the New River Gorge. Much of this stretch is inaccessible by car, making the trip a unique opportunity to see ghost towns, old coal mining sites and numerous scenic spots tucked deep in the Gorge – all from our premium dome-seating with unobstructed and front row views to the most spectacular scenery in the country. Travel the former Chesapeake & Ohio mainline along the banks of the New River and disembark in Hinton, WV to enjoy the Railroad Days street fair with local food stands, arts and crafts, and entertainment before the return ride and dinner on the train.
